Caros leitores e colaboradores do BOMGEAM,
Estamos a lançar nesta oportunidade o número 4 da edição 12 do BOMGEAM (2025) com três artigos científicos e quatro crônicas, além de iniciarmos a atividade MINERAL BOMGEAM DO ANO, e nesta oportunidade o mineral escolhido foi a HALITA, cumprindo a nossa promessa do anterior, 3, edição 12, deste boletim. Ela não foi escolhida pela beleza ou raridade, como em geral é feito, mas por sua importância histórica no desenvolvimento da humanidade até o presente. Claro que outros minerais também tem papel similar.
Os artigos abordam a geologia, mineralogia e geoquímica dos sedimentos holocênicos de parte da ilha do Bananal, no Tocantins; a evolução dos pigmentos minerais na história das artes ocidentais; e novos dados e aspectos históricos das bauxitas da Jamaica e as belezas naturais desse país.
As crônicas contemplam assuntos bem diversificados, mas voltados para os minerais. Apresentamos a crônica científica “O enigma das dendrites de carbono orgânico como inclusões em quartzo calcedônico“; uma outra mostra conflitos filosóficos sobre as cores e as geotintas, ” A Terra é Azul?“; mais uma que descreve as peripécias de um geólogo brasileiro durante sua visita à ilha de São Miguel, em Açores, Portugal, por uma senhora nativa da gema, estudiosa de seus encantos minerais “As aventuras de Marcondes no meio do Atlântico“; e para engrossar este caldo de crônicas, este editor apresenta um pouco de sua história como Geólogo 1975 da UFPA no título “Na sina com a Alemanha: O conglomerado Sopa-Brumadinho e o lambejo da vaca“, escrito por ocasião das comemorações dos 50 anos dos geólogos 1975 da UFPA.
Finalmente disponibilizamos neste número do BOMGEAM o PDF do livro MLC Minerais, Lugares e Causos (Uma obra não autorizada), cuidadosamente organizado pela Dra. Suyanne Flávia Santos Rodrigues e composto de histórias escritas por vários ex-alunos e colegas de Marcondes, acompanhadas por belas fotos coloridas. O livro teve impressão limitada, através da Gráfica e Editora Democrata, 2025, e por esse motivo está disponibilizado on line neste boletim. Ele foi concluído e acessado ainda em 2021. Um carinhoso muito obrigado à Flávia e autores dos textos individuais.
A revista SAPIÊNCIA da FAPEPI, número 53 (21), de agosto/2025, apresenta excelente reportagem dedicada ao APL da Opala, A JOIA DO PIAUÍ, que é coordenado pelo prof. Dr. Erico Gomes do IFPI, acessível pelo link: https://www.fapepi.pi.gov.br/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/ed-53_06.pdf. Em breve será publicado como livro muito oportuno e esperado As Opalas no Piauí de Erico Rodrigues Gomes e colaboradores sob os auspícios do CETEM.

Dear readers and contributors of BOMGEAM,
We are releasing on this occasion issue 4 of edition 12 of BOMGEAM (2025) with three scientific articles and four chronicles, in addition to starting the activity MINERAL BOMGEAM OF THE YEAR, and on this occasion the chosen mineral was HALITE, fulfilling our promise from the previous issue, 3, edition 12, of this bulletin. It was not chosen for its beauty or rarity, as is usually done, but for its historical importance in the development of humanity up to the present. Of course, other minerals also play a similar role. The articles address the geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of Holocene sediments from part of Bananal Island, in Tocantins; the evolution of mineral pigments in the history of Western arts; and new data and historical aspects of bauxites from Jamaica and the natural beauties of this country.
The chronicles cover a wide range of subjects, but are focused on minerals. We present the scientific chronicle “The Enigma of Organic Carbon Dendrites as Inclusions in Chalcedony Quartz”; another discusses philosophical conflicts about colors and geopaints, “Is the Earth Blue?”; yet another describes the adventures of a Brazilian geologist during his visit to the island of São Miguel in the Azores, Portugal, by a native lady, an expert on its mineral charms, “The Adventures of Marcondes in the Middle of the Atlantic“; and to enrich this mix of chronicles, this editor shares a bit of his own history as a geologist from UFPA 1975 in the title “Fate with Germany: The Sopa-Brumadinho Conglomerate and the Cow’s Lick,” written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1975 UFPA geologists.
Finally, in this issue of BOMGEAM, we make available the PDF of the book MLC Minerals, Places and Tales (An unauthorized work), carefully organized by Dr. Suyanne Flávia Santos Rodrigues and composed of stories written by several former students and colleagues of Marcondes, accompanied by beautiful color photos. The book had a limited print run, through Gráfica e Editora Democrata, 2025, and for this reason it is available online in this bulletin. It was completed and accessed back in 2021. A heartfelt thank you to Flávia and the authors of the individual texts.
The SAPIÊNCIA magazine from FAPEPI, issue 53 (21), August 2025, features an excellent report dedicated to the Opala Local Productive Arrangement (APL), THE JEWEL OF PIAUÍ, which is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Erico Gomes from IFPI, accessible at the link: https://www.fapepi.pi.gov.br/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/ed-53_06.pdf. Soon, it will be published as a very timely and anticipated book, As Opalas no Piauí, by Erico Rodrigues Gomes and collaborators under the auspices of CETEM.
